Notes: This song was sung for the first time as a part of ‘Nobin’ that was staged at Shantiniketan on 4th March, 1931.

This song was influenced by ‘Kinhe dekha Kanhaiya pyara ki bansiwalah …’ a song in Thumri style from Savitri Govinda Krishnan, a student of South-Indian origin. Rabindranath had composed quite a few songs after listening to Savitri’s songs and she was the lone singer for these songs as long as she was present at Shantiniketan. Students who were largely habituated to the North Indian style could not manage the South Indian style adopted in the songs. A contemporary student of Shantiniketan Roma Chakraborty has informed in her book “Bhora Thak Smritisudhay’ that Roma Majumdar was the first singer to sing this song. She writes –

… I would like to mention another anecdote about ‘Nobin’. Most of the songs in programs were sung in chorus as desired by Rabindranath and Din-da, only one or two in solo or in duet. Majority of the songs in Nobin too were sung by the chorus, only the songs composed from Savitri’s songs were assigned to her. At last, Nutu-di (Roma Majumdar) was asked to sing a song from that list. It was ‘Kakhon dile poraye…’. It was a pleasant experience. …

Roma Chakraborty has depicted the story behind composition of this song in the section ‘Savitrir Gaaner Katha’ in the same book, thar reads –

… It must be quite enthralling to know how the melody of the beautiful song ‘Kakhon dile poraye …’ had been composed.

One day Gurudev had summoned Din-da and Savitri and explained his plan to put the lyrics of his newly written song along the melody of ‘Kinhe dekha Kanhaiya pyara ki bansiwalah …’ sung by Savitri. When she was asked to sing the song, she started with the first line – ‘Kinhe dekha Kanhaiya pyara ki bansiwalah …’ etc. Gurudev asked her to sing his song following the same melody – she tried with her soul as per instruction.

Din-da interrupted in between – ‘Rabi-da, there is a thin line, I think, between your song and the melody!’

Gurudev agreed to him – ‘You’re just right, I too think so. Wait let me try something else.’ Then he started humming once again and after some time this wounderful composition took shape.

… It was not framed with a rhythmic structure, but in a slow melodic style like an ‘Aalap’, which contained elements like ‘meed’ and ‘alonkar’. It was pleasing to the ears hence.

A few people like us, who had not only heard but learned the song from Savitri in the newly composed tune, would never feel content with the tune prevalent nowadays.

When the complete song was sung, Savitri told us, Din-da was in tears. He said – ‘Rabi-da you’re great!’ …

It was reformed again which is now customary. Notations of the primary tunes can be found in Roma Chakraborty’s book.

Lyric according to Dhrupad having four 'Tuk' (parts) - Sthayee, Antara,Sanchari and Abhog. But the composition of melody corresponds to Thungri style.
