Parjaay: Puja O Prarthana

Taal: Baitalik

Raag: Pilu-Barwan

Written on: 1923

Notes: This song was written in the autumn, 1923.

‘Basanta’, the opera was staged on 22nd and 23rd February, 1923 at the Madan Theatre of Kolkata. Sahana-devi in her memoire ‘Smritir Kheya’ has described how Rabindranath had replaced Bangla words on a few Hindi songs which he had heard from her. Those songs were used in the opera. She continues to write –

… at this time the poet swapped a Hindi song ‘ Narama Kanhaiya…’ with Bangla words as ‘Bujhi Oi Sudure Daakilo More …’. Nobody knew about this song. … My memory seems to have duped me. I have completely forgotten about this song. A beautiful song like this one would have been lost forever if Bula (Prafulla Mahalanabish) had not written about this song, nobody would have any information about it. … After Basanta Utsav this song had never been sung. … I have provided a tape recording for the Rabindra Bharati; anybody may pick up the song and there is no doubt about the tune. It is worth mentioning that the song ‘Srabana-jhulate’ had been composed in the same tune by Atulprasad. Maybe he too had taken it from the same Hindi song. …
