Name of Taals used in Tagore song

List of related Tagore songs

Human beings have always been enthralled by regular patterns in every sphere of life. Hence, Taal or Rhythm Patterns.

Rabindranath Tagore had followed several such patterns or Taals while composing his songs. Majority of them were convensional ones.

For a few songs among his vast creations he had opted for some non-convensional patterns. Even he had to create quite a number of variations in order to match the Poetrical Meter of his verse. Namely - Ardha Jhap, Jhampak, Sasthi, Rupakra, Nabataal, Ekadoshi and Nabapancha. He had implemented some more patterns for which no name were provided. It is arguable whether Rabindranath had composed so many variations of Taals just for the sake of experiment or it was an example of his ideological symbolism to express his fascination for the perpetual rhythm.

A closer look shall reveal his inclination towards traditional patterns with heavy beating like Choutaal, Jhaptaal, Dhamaar etc in his younger age and gradually switching over to shorter and lighter patterns like Dadra and Kaharwa. He was doing his composition of newer Taals around sixty years of his age.

It is worth mentioning that none of the Patterns composed by Rabindranath Tagore has 'Khali' in them.

All the Taals and Rhythm patterns that are used in Rabindra Sangeet are listed below.
