Song of Rabindranath Tagore

English translation of Tagore song ami tomay jato; please find it below.

We provide the meaning of Tagore songs in English on the basis of visitor's request. Translating a Tagore song is very difficult, hope you will agree. We provide this service according to our capability, feelings and knowledge which may differ with others. We do not wish to claim these as serious translations as the site has its focus on the better reproduction of the songs. Translations of regional feelings are never an easy proposition, that too in the form of a verse. Hence we chose to go for a form that is adaptable and equally lucid to the viewers across the globe. We give additional explanations for the typical Indian and Bengali words that may cause confusion. We even attach images where words are found insufficient. The language is deliberately kept as uncomplicated as possible. This service is absolutely free for all.

We are ready to accept such works from anyone who is willing to share with this site. The Editor holds the rights to accept or reject any write-up.

AVAILABLE
I ask no reward for the songs I sang you. I shall be content if they live through the night, until dawn,
like a shepherd-maiden, calls away the stars, in alarm at the sun.
But there were moments when you sang your songs to me, and as my pride knows, my poet,
you will ever remember that i listened and lost my heart.

- Translated by Rabindranath Tagore

Your songs that I listen to
Nothing in exchange will do.
Even if you forget these songs, do not forget that
Till the stars rise in the sky over the shores of the ocean of evening,
Till your court is dismissed,
Your melody will continue
All the songs you have sung to me how can you forget those?
Poet, you will remember that on a rainy night
Or when the spring breeze blows.
This is my only pride
that you cannot forget that unless you forget me!

- Translated by Shailesh Parekh

The songs that I sang to you,
I do not want anything in return for that.
If you want to forget those songs,
Feel free to forget when the first stars come out in the night sky,
And my singing is finished in your courtyard.
The songs that you had sung to me,
Oh the greatest Poet! How will you ever forget that?
You will remember all those songs My Poet,
That you had sung to me –
In the rainy night and in the balmy spring day.
How will you ever forget that your songs had made my life worthwhile!

- Translated by Sheuli Peden (Nath)
