Notes: The song was written on 2nd March, 1930, while travelling by train to Madras, now Chennai.

Shankha Ghosh, the well-known poet and analyst for Rabindranath’s works, in his book ‘Ocampor Rabindranath’, has written –

… Crisis may creep up while analyzing works of Rabindranath with its literal values, as it has been observed looking for the ambition of the song ‘Sunil saagorer shyamolo kinare …’. Sri Jagadish Bhattacharjee has written in his book ‘Kobimanosi’ – ‘None of his poetic creations is known to be associated with Victoria written after they had met for the second time in Paris. However, a song that comes immediately to the mind to have association with Victoria. … the song we are talking was written in 1336B. The song is ‘Sunil saagorer shyamolo kinare …’.’

Rabindranath had revealed a different story behind composing this song in an essay ‘Probasjatrir Patro’ published in ‘Bichitra’ in the month of Chaitra, 1336B –

… ‘I am moving towards Madras by train. I had carried a hefty book with blue cover- that lies untouched. My thirst seems to swell up as I look through the window. … When I see a wonderful image outside the window in the spring sun – it won’t stay for long, I know; I ask myself – if this realization is merely an illusion. My mind would not agree. Aspects that I see now and then are not entirely mine – not only my blissful realization … I take with me the collection of appreciation of the people who have so far seen it and also who are yet to come across. It comes with a poem:

Sunil saagorer shyamolo kinare

Dekhechhi pothe jete tulonahinare …

Some questions still remain unanswered. Although the song was written on an immediate impact of a natural scene, does it not appear to be driven by a memory of some kind? In order to achieve the next level isn’t it necessary to embed such a thought which is considered as an objective for a true poem?

Sunilo saagorer shyamal kinare
Dekhechhi pathe jete tulanahinare.
E katha kabhu aar paare na ghuchite,
Aachhe se nikheler maadhuriruchite.
E katha shikhanu ja aamar binare,
Ganete chinalem se chiro-chinare.
Se katha sure sure chharabo pichhone
Swaponphasaler bichhane bichhane.
Modhupogunje se lahori tulibe,
Kusumkunje se pabane dulibe,
Jhoribe shraaboner baadalosichane.
Sharoter khin meghe bhaashibe aakashe
Smaranbedoner barone aanka se.
Chokite khane khane paabo je taahare
Imane kedaray behage baahare.
