Notes: This song was written in the spring, 1926.
Rabindranath was attached to the Royal family of Tripura for quite a long time. He had tried to employ a dance teacher from Tripura named Buddhimanta Singha along with a mridanga player in the year 1920. However both of them did not stay for more than six months and training with dance had failed to make an impression. Later two dance-teachers from Manipur, Nabakumar and Baikunthanath, had joined Shantiniketan in November, 1925. Since then methodical dance classes had started in Shantiniketan. Amita Sen, in her book ‘Nritya-rachanay Rabindranath’ had written –
… He had composed for our Manipuri dance – ‘Nupur beje jay rinirini …’
Nabakumar Thakur had adapted Manipuri style of dance for the song to teach us. The song was so rhythmic that it appeared that the dance was pre-programmed than the song.
Since the Manipuri dance classes had started the routine of Gurudev, when he used to hold our hands from beginning to the end to teach us so tenderly, started waning. He did encourage us by sitting beside the class and occasionally he would rise and explain us the demand, although chances of having him beside us right from start to finish gradually faded out. …
